Customs and Restrictions

Certain customs must be respected when visiting foreign countries.

CLOTHING:
Do not wear singlet tops, crop tops, mini jean shorts and mini skirts as these are considered inappropriate in Qatar and in European churches, cathedrals and government buildings.
In Qatar, shoulders and thighs must be covered.

NOT SO FRIENDLY:
Be aware of some locals that ask for assistance or want to sell you something. Pickpockets often work in teams and as one distracts you, another is removing your valuable possessions. Some groups of people work together to create scams by getting you to 'bet' on a game or contribute money for 'charity'.
Some common scams that aim to distract you so they can steal your valuables (wallet, mobile phone):

Signing petitions for false organisations..they follow you and say "sign, sign"

Thieving mothers using babies to distract you

Pickpockets - always keep your valuables locked away so they can't be quickly and easily accessed

Pea ball scam using 3 cups...you will never win!
Never leave your bags unattended - keep a firm grip on them!

There is a travel warning for Berlin, Prague and Vienna for pickpockets and thieves. Keep your wallet in a safe place and only carry a photocopy of your passport when you are on day tours. Your passport should be kept in a secure place (safe) in the hotel or in locked luggage.

Keep your valuable possessions safe by:
  • Using a carry bag and handbag that are closed by secure flaps, zippers and locks.
  • Wear your bag across your body at the front rather than over your shoulder or clasped in your hand and be aware of foreign movement.
  • Never leave your bad unattended or your handbag hooked over a chair or next to you on the floor while having something to eat.
  • Avoid wearing bumbags as they spell out 'tourist' and are a favourite of pickpockets.
  • Railway stations, some popular tourist areas of Berlin, the area around Prague Castle and main tourist areas of Prague; and the plaza and shopping area around St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna are known hotspot for thieves. Be aware that some criminals in Prague impersonate police and stop people to check their passports and foreign currency.
